seongbukdong image In history of Korea, Arirang-gogae ridge symbolizes the history of Korean people’s frustration and hardships as well as their persistence in overcoming those trials. It was the ridge which people were forced to cross over with tears and poor rucksack.

With this history, there are a lot of names of Arirang-gogae ridge sometimes in reality and other times by its symbolism. During the Japanese Occupation, a movie was made with the background of Arirang-gogae, depicting the people’s wishes for independence symbolically.
 
Based on Donam crossroads, Arirang-gogae ridge stretches to Dongsomun-dong to the west, Dongseon-dong to the east and the streets in front of Arirang Market where Donam-dong and Jeongneunggil meet. Chunsa, Na Woon-gyu shot the film “Arirang” here to release in 1926.

In its commemoration, Arirang Festival takes place every year while the project of “Street of films” for this area which had started in 1997 transformed the place now to a street brimming with tradition and culture with equipments of theme park, Arirang Cine Center and Arirang Digital Public Library, etc. Here and there at Arirang-gogae ridge, there are a number of rest places and Na Woon-gyu Mini Park as well, which is very suitable for the family outing.
